There are large unopened mass graves in Malakal and others in Bor . Part of the figure of 29,000 are the 11,000 Nuer casualties in Juba dating back to December . But there are many closed houses from which a strong stench of rotting corpses is issuing and that nobody dares to open . Worse , the massacres are still going on in Juba itself at present , albeit at a lower level of intensity.

  • By this we do not even refer to the 850,000 IDPs and the 250,000 refugees who are running away in all directions and dying in large numbers of exhaustion and lack of food and healthcare . The oft-repeated casualty number of 10,000 is now completely obsolete . Father Mark Opere Omol , recently sent by the Vatican to assess the situation was able to say , after travelling to Bor , Malakal and Bentiu , that by talking to elders , he has assembled a figure of 29,000 casualties[1] . He also talked with NGOs and the UN and his own estimate is that we might reach perhaps 50,000 casualties

  •  The display of UN forces is completely useless since people are killed at times practically under their noses (the back of the large Tongpiny camp is a sieve and people are frequently kidnapped there and killed) . In addition the besieging of the UN facilities on February 10th was carried out by the militia thugs called dot beny (Save your leader) , without any orders from the government , or what still passes for it . The militiamen broke the windows of 130 cars parked at the UN parking lot and then stole the vehicles right under the nose of the UN soldiers . This was not only theft but it damaged the survival of those inside who are short of food rations . Private smugglers used to come to the camp and sold food inside . Some of the cars were theirs . They won’t come back . Then makeshift shops at the gate were also dismantled in the hope of starving those inside. Those thugs kidnapped , under the eyes of UN soldiers boys who were taking their shower outside the camp fence . They were taken away and killed . Ninety-one students were lured away last week from the compound under the pretext that the university had reopened and that hey could go for their exams . They were killed . An Anglican priest (a Dinka) had come to Tongpiny and told the IDPs it was now safe to go back to their houses . Four families took the risk and they were found murdered the next morning .
  • Some people took Father Mark to a place by the Nile where captives are brought at night . The ground was so soaked in blood that it stank . This reverend is going back to Rome at the end of the week and intends to go public on Radio Vatican .
  • These mass murders are carried out by the dot beny militiamen[2] because even the Dinka Army is getting fed up . In order to know whom to kill , they greet people in the street by saying “Male which means “how are you ?” in Nuer . If you are careless enough to answer “Mal magwa” (“I am all right” in Nuer) , you are dead . These young men are completely uneducated (they do not even speak Juba Arabic , but only Dinka) and obey orders blindly .
  • As a result the Nuer armies that are now converging on government-controlled places simply say they want to kill all the Dinka . Or even their supposed allies (such as is the case for the Shilluk in Malakal) .
  • The only glimmer of hope are the churches , where many courageous Dinka priests have saved groups of Nuer , telling the killers that they would have to kill them first before they would get to the Nuer civilians . But these priests lack even the most basic forms of help (food , water , sanitation) .
  • Civil administration , which was never very strong in South Sudan , has now practically completely broken down . The country has become an administrative wilderness .

[1] This priest is from the small Acholi tribe and therefore not motivated by ethnic feelings .

[2] They are brought from Western Bahr-el-Ghazal and speak neither Arabic nor English , only Dinka .
