Trump Team’s Queries About Africa Point to Skepticism And Uncertainity

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s views of Africa have, until now, been a mystery. But a series of questions from the Trump transition team to the State Department indicate an overall skepticism about the value of foreign aid, and even about American security interests, on the world’s second-largest continent.I find the piece by Helene Cooper , January 13 2017 in the New York Times quite revealing and extremely useful. A four-page list of Africa-related questions from the transition staff has been making the rounds at the State Department and Pentagon, alarming longtime Africa specialists who say the framing and the tone of the questions suggest an American retreat from development and humanitarian goals, while at the same time trying to push forward business opportunities across the continent.

Given the external as well as internal drivers to radicalization and the rise of Salafist groups one would highlight the imperative of addressing the challenge at both levels.

  • Yemen: The Dark Stalemate

New balance of military conflict is frustrating the Saudi-led coalition and makes their positions unsustainable. Militarily speaking Yemen is locked in a deadly stalemate. Currently, the anti-Houthi campaign is on pause. Politically the gap is extensive, between the Houthi and the Saudi –led government, to expect a breakthrough. Diplomatically, no amount of pressure is expected as the US election pushes everything to the realm of the uncertain. I mean any peace deal, possibly yes, but probably no.
